A lot of us get stuck in our ways at a certain level of age. Breaking out of our old habits and making an effort to improve ourselves can become much harder. Whether it’s a New Year’s resolution or a resolution for something new by anytime of the year, constant changes can be difficult. But it is not impossible to change your ways. The best way to make that change is Drop the perfectionism and be better than perfect. Most of the time this “all-or-nothing” mindset gets in your way of making progress. Being better than perfect means focus on the change that you want and why you want it.
Many times, when we are making a change, we focus on what we don’t like about it. If your resolution is to exercise, you focus on how much you hate running or going to the gym. The secret, however, is to focus on why you want to make that change. What are the benefits of making this change? Remember that when it comes to improving yourself, every small victory counts. For example, if your ultimate goal is to run a certain distance without stopping, every milestone on the way matters. What doesn’t matter is if some other guy at the gym can run a marathon without breaking a sweat. Calculate how much time it took you to hit every milestone, to track your energy. Allow yourself to celebrate each milestone you reach, no matter how minor it might seem. You deserve it.
There are particular aspects of your personality you would like to change. It might also be you have made mistakes in your personal or business life, and are looking to rectify the behavior that got you to that point. If you want to learn how to change, you need to own up to them instead of blaming on external factors. Think about the current state of your personal and professional life. Take note of the things you’re not satisfied with and want to change. Consider which of those situations are within your control to change. If you want to change yourself for the better, you need to have clear goals in mind about the ways you want to improve. The key to improving yourself is to approach the process logically, instead of hoping that success will fall into your lap. Hence, figure out actionable steps and then schedule them.
Accomplishing anything great in life requires significant change that pushes us beyond our comfort zones. So, when you are doubt, choose change. It’s never too old, never too bad, never too late, and never too sick to start from scratch once again. There are two things to aim at in life: first, to get what you want; and after that, to enjoy it. Only the wise man achieves the second. People say I will be happy when things happen this way. But, it is like postponing your happiness to an unsure future. The better alternative is to try to postpone your sorrow to some future moment as much as you can.
